It is common to talk as if there is a single UK social security system, but this has not been the case for some time.

Recent years have seen the increasing devolution of powers over social security, which means that what you may receive in support can depend a great deal on where in the UK you live.

At the same time, an increased focus on discretionary, crisis support through a patchwork of schemes has led to large differences at the local level.
